LEARNING in action.

The Data & Research Internship Collaborative connects local college students with nonprofits to help in collecting or understanding data.

Students gain meaningful experience. Nonprofits gain research and evaluation support that strengthens their impact. Everyone learns from one another.

What it is:

The Collaborative is a community-based internship program led by the DataWise Foundation.

It pairs undergraduate students with nonprofits and community organizations for data and research projects. Projects include everything from surveys and focus groups to analysis and reporting.

Each project is supervised by experienced mentors from the DataWise Foundation team to ensure quality, learning, and meaningful results.

Who it's for:

Students

Hands-on learning that builds real-world research skills while serving the community.

Interns work on collaborative teams, gain professional mentorship, and see how data can drive social change.

Nonprofits

Affordable access to research and evaluation support.

Projects are designed to meet your needs and your budget—helping you collect data, measure outcomes, or communicate your impact.

Funders & Partners

A proven model for workforce development and community capacity-building.

Your support helps train the next generation of data practitioners and strengthens local organizations at the same time.

Example Projects

In summer 2025, three interns partnered with the Grand Rapids Food Co-op to design and run a community-wide survey aimed at understanding what residents want and need from their future store. The survey was distributed to more than 1,000 community members and used display logic to adapt questions for different audiences, ensuring more relevant and useful responses. To support GRFC’s planning and decision-making, we developed interactive Tableau dashboards that allowed stakeholders to explore the results, identify trends, and translate community input into actionable insights as the co-op moves toward opening.
